FTBA helps raise the Alarm

FTBA helps man to make his home safer

A frail and frightened 55-year-old former furnishing industry worker has been awarded £500 by the Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association towards the cost of a video entry system at his home in a vandal prone area of Scotland.

Severely disabled, Doug lives alone in an area so subject to vandalism and anti-social behaviour that he does not feel able to allow visitors into his home without jeopardising his safety.

“This is a terribly sad case and a most unfortunate reflection of the times in which we now live,” said FTBA chief executive Jonathan Seddon-Brown. “Other charities have helped Doug secure his garden with new fencing and a gate but his social worker was still concerned that Doug should have a secure entry system for his home and we are delighted to have been able to help towards the cost of something that will not only make his home more secure, but also give someone so vulnerable greater peace of mind.”

Doug’s grant was one of many made by the FTBA’s November benefits committee meeting at which at total of £8,223 was assigned to people needing help with everything from a much needed holiday in the sunshine to stairlifts and urgent house repairs.

“As the industry’s only dedicated charity we are contacted by people who have worked or still work in the furnishings industry and who find themselves facing unexpected hardships,” said Jonathan.

“By the very nature of what we do, many of the applications that come through to us are from older, more vulnerable members of society, although we often help younger families too.”

One such case that the FTBA was also able to help in its latest round of grants was that of a home counties couple whose youngest child suffers from cerebral palsy.  Andrew, an office furniture company worker, is looking for assistance in funding a ground floor extension to the family home in order to adapt it to the needs of their disabled son.

The FTBA approved a grant of £600 towards the cost of the extension which, along with help from many other charities and associations, should enable the family to make a start on the building work which will make such a difference to all of their liv
